The Over-the-Rhine Learning Center (OTRLC) has been promoting Adult Literacy for 20 years. We have served the community well by improving the reading levels of scores of teens and adults, by preparing students to earn their GEDs, by teaching introductory computer skills, and by developing language, literacy, and life skills for employment (and so much more!) in many individuals.

We met Dr. Angela Kinney early this year and she developed a Children's Literacy Project under our auspices as a companion piece to our existing programming. She has over 20 years teaching experience in elementary and university settings, along with a Doctorate in Literacy from the University of Cincinnati.

SO HERE’S THE BIG NEWS!:

We have decided to transition into this next decade of community service with the focus solely on Children’s Literacy. Dr. Angela Kinney will be continuing to steer this new programming as Leslie Cook, the current Director of the OTRLC, retires.

The unfolding children's literacy program is grounded in this mission: to provide proven, effective reading intervention to 1st through 3rd graders. Dr. Kinney uses the highly respected Orton-Gillingham method of reading instruction. So please stay with us! Here’s why:

Students who are not reading on grade level by the end of third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school than those who are. The problem is even greater for low-income students, who are 13 to 17 times less likely to graduate from high school if they cannot read successfully by the end of third grade. Locally, 70% of OTR public school third-graders missed this milestone. This problem has only been exacerbated by the pandemic.

The people at this organization recognize the value of their residents and families having an easy inroad to improved literacy skills. We so value their partnership with us and their amazing commitment to the OTR community. We hope you do, too.
